Rafael Nadal Withdrew Matteo Berrettini to Hit the US Open final and into the Verge of a 19th Grand Slam title.
The Spanish second seed will face Russian Daniil Medvedev on Sunday following a straight-sets triumph over Berrettini.
Nadal said:”First place was a tiny bit annoying, I had plenty of break things and you also do not need to be in a tie-break with a player like Matteo.
“In the tie-break I was a little lucky but I survived. Finally I had a rest in the moment and the game. I’m super glad to return at the final of the US Open.
“Congrats to Matteo. He’s young, he’s everything and he’s got a terrific future ahead of him.
On a windy and rainy night in New York, since Berrettini, at his first, had two things to the opening collection, a storm temporarily threatened to boil beneath the roofing.
The 24th seed had been clinging fending off six break points including a point.
But the underdog raced to a 4-0 lead and a drop shot followed by a volley right on to this baseline gave him his big chance.
But when another volley hit on the tape, and one drop shot fell short, that chance vanished.
Every service match was a trial for Berrettini, who rescued break points in the first and third games of the second series but succumbed to trail 5-3.
Two places to the good, Nadal vanished into the distance along with also a 7-6 (6) 6-4 6-1 victory was wrapped up in two hours and 35 minutes.
If he can defeat Medvedev, the 33-year-old will proceed to within one name of Roger Federer’s record tally of 20.
Sunday will be Medvedev’s initial, and Nadal’s 27th final. They have played with each other once before and Nadal won it in style 6-3 6-0.
“Daniil is among the strongest players on the tour, he is making steps weekly and that he had an amazing summer,” said the Spaniard. “He’ll be the toughest opponent and that I will need to play my very best.”
